Tractor-Trailer Driver Charged After BB Gun Incident on I-40 in Haywood County

HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. – A tractor-trailer driver was taken into custody Tuesday after authorities say he fired a BB gun into another vehicle while traveling along Interstate 40 in Haywood County, North Carolina.
According to the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office, deputies quickly located and apprehended the suspect following the reported incident.
Authorities identified the driver as Billy Franklin Swaim, 52, of Wilkes County, North Carolina. Investigators say Swaim allegedly fired a BB gun into another vehicle while driving on the interstate.
Swaim has been charged with misdemeanor going armed to the terror of the people and misdemeanor injury to personal property.
He was transported to the Haywood County Detention Center, where he is being held under a $5,000 secured bond, according to officials.
The sheriff’s office credited assistance from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, which helped locate and detain the tractor-trailer involved in the incident.
No additional details about the condition of the vehicle struck by the BB gun or potential injuries were immediately released. Authorities said the quick response by deputies and state troopers helped ensure the safety of motorists traveling through the area.
